Getting gradient fill to work on printer.

On the a10m WHEN do you select the gradient. Its new to me and I have tried it a few times with no success.
I've switched the printer on, set up a gradient of 0 to 100 and gone back to the main menu. I then go and print form sd but it doesn't seem to work and I have a one colour print. I saw a youtube video where he said he had to wait till the print was going and then go into the mixer option and that how he does it.
What's the official way to do this. Manual is vague at best and I can't seem to find any help anywhere. I see people show prints but not show the process up to that in its entirety.
