How do I make sure I use the settings from the firmware, not some settings stored in the EEPROM?

If you don't know whether you changed any settings or not, then I guess you need to restore to the default settings, and then try it....

yeah I remember this is it. Or you can just reinstall the firmware.

You can try the M502 Gcode : Revert to the default "factory settings."
