GT2560 Rev a+ PSU about to break - what to replace with?

Post by hijinx » Tue Oct 27, 2020 4:50 am

The PSU for my i3 Pro B is on it's way out - its making clicking noises and what sounds like coil whine.
I dont think it has much life left... so I will replace it.
Its the 12v 15A PSU.
Rather than a like for like replacement, I was thinking to upgrade to either as 12V 20A PSU, or a 24v 10A+ PSU.

I understand that the 24V PSU can work with the GT2560 rev A+ per the wiki.
I like this option as I have a 24V compatible heated bed already (needs rewiring to change from 12v to 24v), which should be good for faster heat up.
Also steppers will get higher voltage, so also better for print speed.
As far as I can tell from the GT2560 rev a+ schematics, the fans run off separate 12v from a regulator.
What about the hot end heater cartridge? does it need to be 24v?
Are there any down sides or other considerations with 24v?

24v is preferred over 12v 20A as the potential for higher power draw from the PSU might be a problem for power connectors...

Help welcome! thanks

I picked up a meanwell LRS-200-24 24v PSU.
I also picked up a 24v cartridge, and will resolder my aluminum MK3 heat bed to 24v connections.
Lets see how it goes!
