Advice seeked upgrade faulty components i3 pro B

Post by 5000fleurs » Wed May 20, 2020 4:40 am

Newcomer with a faulty printer. So far:

Faulty LCD board on delivery (knob responding to rotation when trying to cycle through the menu)
The printer is controlled from Easyprint

The print head would not work: heated the plastic but nothing came out, once 1cm of filament had been driven in, the motor started to make a clicking sound. Looking through the loading spring I could see the gear wheel clicking trying to push the filament. A blob of melted plastic eventually showed at the tip of the extruder.

I dismantled the printing head mechanism to check it all out and cleaned the plastic out using the long pin supplied with the printer. The heating element was working then, once melted I could push the plastic out.

On re-assembly, the printer stopped working as before: I could not drive the axis from Easyprint, nothing was heating up.

Following other threads on the forum, I found that the heating thermistor of the head is dead. (Tested heating element fuses on the board with a multimeter, no voltage drop. 0/0 Min temp error, head not heating up. Swapped the thermistor connector with the one for the bed in order to get a reading, which meant I could head the head up again)

I get the point that I need to replace some components from my printer, but based on my experience so far I am quite keen to check out possible upgrades in the hope of getting parts that work!

Are there any recommendations for better print heads and LCD control panel?

Thank you for taking the time to read this, all suggestions welcome

According to your description, the thermistor is damaged. You can replace it. Are there any other parts that are faulty?

Hello William, thank you for your reply

I have ordered a replacement extruder head with thermistor form the UK where I'm based to get going asap and a pack of 5 thermistors only from China to repair my existing hot head.

The LCD2004 controller displays status indications. It responds to pressing the control know, showing a list of menu, but turning the knob to select a menu does nothing. As I was able to control the printer from a PC, this has not stopped me but it this will need sorting as I don't want the noisy printer right next to my working from home PC (especially not during confinement!)

Prior to the thermistor breaking, I was able to control x, y and z axis (z threaded rod needed greasing). I managed to level the bed with the manual method.

While waiting for the replacement parts to arrive, I will start learning about Cura - this seems to be the next step

I really appreciate the help, thank you.
