DRV8825 Don't work on Z axis

Hi All
Not a big issue but thought i would upgrade the stepper drivers, and reading through the wiki it looked fairly easy to do, just swap over from the standard A4988 Stepper drivers to the DRV8825.
Fit them correct way up, set Vref and edit the firmware.
Running them on X & Y axis has dropped the noise when my printer is working a fair bit and the stepper motors are running cooler than before. I have had issues with the Z axis since building the printer but of late it seems to have settled but i have had to crank the vref on the A4988 up to 0.95v before the Z axis would move in both directions, adjusting it any higher and the motors make some awful noises and don't move in either direction.
I have left all 3 jumpers under each DRV8825 in place as i want to run at 1/32, and for X & Y axis this works fine but i can't get the Z axis to run at all, i did read somewhere that you remove all but one jumper and still have 1/32 stepping but cant find the page now or remember which jumper to leave in place?
Not sure if its down to jumper config or that i'm running with a 12v PSU? I have set vref on the DRV8825 at 0.5v which is 1/2 the Amp on each phase of the motors (42SHD0034-20B), for X & Y axis and extruder, as the Z axis is 2 motors do i have to double the Vref to 1v?
Thanks in advance for any assistance
