Y Axis Steeper Motor Very Warm

Hi guys
I have just fired up my A30 for the first time and doing a test print I have noticed that the Y Axis stepper Motor is very warm
Is this normal due to the weight of the larger bed it has to move?

Is the voltage of the blue A4988 normal(0.6-0.9V)?
If so, then this might be a flaw that Geeetech is dealing with, you can participate in this vote in the Facebook group, we are collecting information:

Hi Gingko
I have just checked the Vref and it was set at 0.955v so I have taken it back below the 0.9v and I will see if that makes any difference

Hi
By the way, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the
A4988 stepstick module can operate in two modes.
Its configuration is hardware-set.
Depending on the mode selected, the current setting must be reduced.
Incorrect current settings result in a significant
heating up of the controlled stepper motor.
For those who are curious and thirsty for knowledge, please refer to the
datasheet.

My y axis was very hot causing the extruder to be moved mid print randomly to outside the xy axis (causing some awful noise from the motors).
My voltage was 1.5v so on advice I've turned the x and z motors to 0.9v and the y down to 0.6v. The y is still warmer than the x but it is nowhere near as hot and I've not had any failed prints.

Hello guys, i notice i have the same problem,
but i have no idea how/where to check and set the voltage? does that require any special eletronics skills, or it's just parameteres in software?

You should minimum know how to work with a multimeter.
Very warm is also no big deal, under 80c you can complete ignore it, around 100c it get dangerous to damage the stepper.

This is a known issue with the A30. I've built 4 of them and each one had the stepper driver current set incorrectly. The Y-axis is the worst and will get hot enough to damage the motor. The extruder is also set very poorly and gets too hot.
I would recommend setting the Y-stepper driver to 0.6 to 0.7 volt and the extruder to around 0.5 volt.
On a side note while you're in there adjusting voltages, since there is only one Z-axis driver, and two motors, you want the Z-axis stepper driver voltage to be as high as you can get it - usually around 1.1v. Otherwise you will loose torque and miss steps.

Thank you all for generous help, anyway in my ignorance, i didn't understand your instructions.
I found this video which show that actually procedure is not that dificult, just words are dificult.

To be honest, before buying the printer, i thought it would be, just like click, PRINT, all the settings, preparations (software and hardware) are surprising me.
Btw. i am starting to love the 3D printing comunity, a lot of super genious people willing to share designs, knowladge etc...
Thanks.
