Hello,
as You know, the Geeetech PSU is not very safe. It doesn't follow european rules for electrical security. Therefore, I'm thinking about to use the PC PSU of my Personal PC to power the Geetech Prusa i3, too.

The maximum power consumption of the Geeetech i3 Prusa should be 180W. This is, what a high performance graphic card consumes, too. Therefore, if the PC PSU is of the range 350W and more and the PC is not rquipped with a high perfomance graphic card, the PC PSU should provide enough power to feed the Prusa i3, too.

There are several benefits:

• The PC PSU is fan cooled
• There are no electrical parts which provides 230V electric voltage (Security risk!!!)
• Probably better quality of current stabilization

But for me, the biggest advantage is the security. The Geeetech PSU as well as most other 3D Pronter PSUs are not allowed to be used in Europe!

What do You think about this?

To resolve the security issue (There are electrical parts which provides 230V electric voltage!) I printed this PSU cover for my I3 Pro printer, provided by jdobry:

This was the first print, looks quite good.



The second print was not so good, had to change the nozzle first and printed with higher temperature, 205°C:



Third print, even better, now again like the first print with 195°C.



I strongly recommend to apply this case to Your i3 Pro B/W/X models, because the electric installation is a real risk!

Hi,

I will switch to a PC ATX power supply as well.

As you mentioned there is a silent 120mm fan in the PSU, No 230V parts outside, A 5V standby supply for my Octoprint Pi, and I can switch the PSU on/off through Octoprint.

Here is now the Version V5 for the i3 Pro C 250W PSU:
Remark: On the picture, this is a beta version V4 of the design. The final V5 fits better on the right side and contains some more enhancements.

Summary:
To avoid the risk of electric shock with the default Geeetech Power Supply Unit (PSU) of the Geeetech i3 Pro printers, there are two possible solutions:

Geeetech i3 Pro B/W/X (180W PSU)
- Use an external PC PSU, modification on the power signal cords is necessary to enable the PC PSU to be switches on/off.

- Print a additional cover to cover the electrical connectors and place the power switch and power plug. Here You can find the STL and SCAD files:
