White space is what designers call free space in modern website redesign. In general, it doesn't have to be white.

Proper use of free space makes your content easy to understand by removing extraneous details and breaking down information into easily digestible chunks. In other words, it reduces the cognitive load on the user, which in turn reduces the bounce rate.
