how do I upload firmware from a Mac
how do I upload firmware from a Mac
hi,
I am having trouble uploading the firmware from my mac to my Geeetech Prusa I3 pro C dual extruder printer. I started to upgrade the firmware but it failed.
I have opened the latest marlin.ino (1.0.2-1) and sketch begins to upload but then i get an error message part way through
"avrdude: no programmer has been specified on the command line or the config file
Specify a programmer using the -c option and try again"
I have searched for a solution but cant find it on this forum or any arduino forums.as I am not very competent at coding I do not understand the message .
could anybody talk me through the process for Mac users.
(I think the upload may have bricked my controller as the LCD display now shows 2 rows of black squares)
Thanks in anticipation.

Can your printer work fine with the software Repetie Host?Such as move the motor of every axis, extrude manually...
Additionally, about the 2 rows of black squares, you can try adjusting the potentiometer on the back of the LCD and you can solve it.
Look this picture:

Re: how do I upload firmware from a Mac
i have tried to connect to Repetier-host and it will not connect.
Reports ' Couldn't open port for device usbserial-A903RZJZ'
also bottom line of page shows "362 FPS Unknown printer firmwareDisconnected"
also unable to change the LCD display. Still showing the squares
I would really appreciate any step by step help to get through this. As I said in the opening post, it appears that the firmware has got part through an update and been interrupted or failed, so now the firmware on the board is corrupted. Every time I try to get through it I get asked to specify a program with the -c option.
Any suggestions?
Regards
Mike

Did the driver cause it?Was the printer recognized by your Mac?Here is the driver downloading link:
http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/D2XX.htm
And about uploading the firmware on Mac,you can refer to this:
https://www.arduino.cc/en/Guide/MacOSX
Just in Board Type, select Mega 2560 .
Some snapshots would be appreciated.
Best Regards

Re: how do I upload firmware from a Mac
I have tried reloading the drivers.
Rerun marlin gives same response as before. I have a screenshot
Re: how do I upload firmware from a Mac
hi william.
I have followed the advice and downloaded the driver again, but no change.
I already have that board selected.
here are screenshots of the results of the attempts to upload.

Check all the steps again plz:
1.About FTDI USB Serial Driver on Mac,refer to this link:
http://www.geeetech.com/forum/viewtopic ... 952#p27952
2.About the compiling error,i think you can use an old version of Arduino(yours is version 1.6.8,the latest version has too many problems.),version 1.0.1 recommanded, download it from here:
http://www.geeetech.com/wiki/index.php/ ... or_Mac.zip
3.About Setting up Mega2560 on a Mac,you can refer to someone's experience with a Sanguinololu board:
http://dcgtek.blogspot.fi/2013/04/setti ... n-mac.html
The only thing you need to change is to select Mega2560 when you're making a choice to the "Board".
Try it patiently please. If all the above have been done and it doesn't work.Try a WINDOWS computer,i think...
Good Luck

Re: how do I upload firmware from a Mac
William,
You are a star and a lifesaver.
I was losing the will to live having tried everything to get my printer back online.
Your suggestion to try an earlier version of Arduino was the answer.
I went right back to version 1.0 and it worked first time. Firmware uplaoded, the LCD flickered back into life and I have my printer back
Thanks so much for your patience and help with this.
Regards
Mike
