DIY Twin Platform Bed Tutorial for a Small Bedroom
Some time ago, my family and I had some visitors to our home. We didn't have enough beds for everyone, so we built a twin platform bed for each of our two girls. With my limited knowledge of woodwork, I expected it to be tough to construct one. However, it turned out to be a straightforward exercise that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Below are super easy directions, in case you want to make one for your little ones.
Materials Needed for Your Twin Platform Bed Frame
4′ x 8′ piece of plywood 3/4″ thick. 10″ x 51″
(I had these pieces cut to 41'x78′)
Three 1′ x 8′ Pine Boards
Five 4″ Pine Legs
Five Heavy Duty Top Plates
Jig Pocket Hole Drill
Wood Screws
Liquid Nails
Sandpaper
Stain
How to make a DIY Twin Platform Bed
Step 1: Cut the Plywood and the Pine Board
Use a table saw (or have a professional guy do it for you) and cut your plywood to 41″ x 78″. Since the standard sized twin mattress is 38″ x 75″ you must leave a 3-inch allowance to give your mattress room. As a result, it's critical to take quick measurements of your futon.
Pick the three pine boards and cut them into sizes. The two long sides should measure 78″ while the two end pieces 41″.
Step 2: Attach the Legs to the Plywood
Screw down the five heavy-duty top plates on all four plywood corners and one at the center. Next, lay the plywood down and attach the five legs using the screws. The plates provide a firm grip for the legs to the plywood.
When choosing legs for the bedframe I would suggest short ones since it's easy for children to get in and out of bed. Furthermore, low profile bed makes your children's bedroom elegant and updated to the contemporary world.
Step 3: Attach the Board Sides
Attach all the four board sides of the twin size platform bed frame using liquid nails. To make the boards even more firm add a few finish nails. Alternatively, you can use a Jig Pocket Hole Drill. Make three holes on each board and join each other using screws. A Jig Pocket Hole Drill, despite its high price, allows you to drill a hole at an accurate angle and virtually hides your screws.
Step 4: Sand the Bed Frame
Lightly sand the round edges and the entire frame to remove those imperfections such as blade marks and rough surfaces till they are nice and smooth.
Step 5: Stain the Bed Frame
I used a homemade stain that I found in my garage then followed it with a sparkling pink paint. Frankly, it was my daughter's choice of color. However, feel free to choose any color you want or leave it natural.
Step 6: Voila! Happy Ending
Your twin platform bed is ready for your son or daughter to hop in and enjoy that sweet nap. And that's how you build a twin platform bed for a small bedroom.
