Filament doesn't go through correctly...sometimes

Post by pixelatex » Sat Jul 18, 2015 5:44 pm

It seems to happen randomly.. my filament will stop going through unless I push the wire through by hand.

When this happens during printing.. you can imagine how the model looks.. half finished while the extruder head is floating above it and trying to print without filament...

I tested the extruder and it seemed to work fine.. Some prints have no issues.. but every now and then.. The extruder seems to fck up... This happens mostly during big models which makes it quite irritating because it's a big waste of time/filament.

Can you help me out?

I have the same issue. When I start printing a job the filament doesn't feed. The extruder tries to feed the filament but just kind of "ratchets". Every once in a while it will feed some filament. If I stop the print job and manually advance the extruder, it feeds properly. I have reloaded the Marlin firmware several times.

hi,Rjack.can you feed filament manually.plaest increase the extruder temperature and feed filament manually to see whether there is jam in the nozzle.i not clear why you advance extruder?

I somewhat managed to fix it...

First: there is a tiny wheel inside the extruder that helps guide your filament.

Remove the heatsink and fan and you will see that there is a phillips screw(cross) on the wheel that will allow you to move it. Move it so that it aligns perfectly. The filament should be between the grooves of the wheel.

Secondly: the filament tends to bend at the edge...

Placing a tube like in the image will prevent your filament from bending at the entry point of the extruder :)

Hey Thanks. I found the small guide wheel was loose and tightened it. I also found that the item I was printing was laying a very thin, almost transparent layer down as the base layer. Once it completed that layer it started printing normally and finished printing the part very nicely. I also changed back to PLA as I am still having problems getting ABS to print correctly. Also reloaded the Marlin firmware. Funny thing with the ABS is the extruder will continue to feed (feed gear turns constantly) but nothing comes out. With the PLA it makes the ratcheting noise but does feed a very thin layer. Couldn't print with ABS again tonight but printing with PLA again nicely.

Still have not been able to get Extruder 2 to work. I think it is a control board issue as the heater light turns on correctly but the extruder does not heat up.

I am having major issues with my MK8 dual Extruders. They are just not reliable and I have been searching in the forums, applying every thing I could find with no luck. So finally I am posting my efforts and see that last post has not been posted. The Extruders keep clogging and I am at wits end. I suspect that when Geeetech sold me a 3mm extruder, it was not correctly converted and it is not settings at my end. What should I do?

My POST:
I am having issue with my 3mm extruders. I have a Pursa I3 c dual extruder and have read that many others have the same issue. The extruder works for a bit after I push filament through it, then seems to jam and the stepper makes the popping sound as it stalls. If I push on the filiment just before starting a job, it works okay for a few levels, but it always stalls after a while and I get a half printed part.

* I have taken the extruder apart to align things (found #0 gear was loose).
* I have set the extruder driver(s) to 1.24 volts,
* I am running the temperature at 250c (w/ ABS).
* I have the tension set screw backed off all the way
* I have set the feed rate from 95mm down to 10mm feed rates in testing
* I have sliced with slic3r in both native mode (in config screen) and from Repetier for gcode builds
* I have set the path for slic3r config(s) in Repetier so the ini files are the same as slic3r config
* I have leveled the heat bed and set the extruder hight
* I tried 1mm feed rate after it was jammed in manual mode (made a longer delay between pops)
* The issue happens with both left #0 and right #1 extruders.
* When it starts popping, I can push on the filiment and get it to work for a short time.
* I also tried changing the nozzle from 0.35mm to 0.5 and still have the same issue.
-----
With the nozzle head off and holding down the filament load lever, I can not get a 3mm probe all the way through. The tube changes from 3mm to 2mm mid way. Could it be that there is a wrong part inside the extruder filament path and it was not fully setup from Geetech for 3mm?

Please help

I see your suggestion to try to align the idler wheel. I have did this as stated with “I have taken the extruder apart to align things (found #0 gear was loose). “ and will try again, but if you have a fix that adds a tube, then you should send me the tubing. I bought the printer as is and if there needs to be extra parts, then please contact your customer service department to take action.

I am getting a bit disappointed with the MK8 Extruders on the I3 dual setup from Geeetech. The throat tubes have a very ruff inner surface. Regardless, I did the following:

I took the extruders off and checked the idlers. They float on the bearing and no adjustment is possible. I did change a washer that was a bit large and could rub the side on the bearing, however, there ware no alignment issues.

Next I used some black irrigation water line that fit into the top of the extruder and added 100mm length.

I tried to print and it worked for 5 layers then the head clogged and the extruder hovered as it shadowed over the item it partiality printed.

Please help
