M201 slicer problems

Hi I have been using the i3 m201 for about a week, had to tinker a little and I'm starting to make progress.
I'm using repetier host v1.6 and I find that occasionally the printer pauses during prints for upto 39 seconds then starts again, I use the plugged in slic3r but feel that it doesn't work very well for me. The layer adhesion isn't the best no matter how I configure it and I find the side walls very stepped and layers but uniform.
I find that the curaengine works far better and is more precise but after about 8 layers of printing it starts overlapping layers and extruding the next layer somewhere else on the print bed. It's starting to get annoying.
Can anyone confirm the firmware of the printer the board is running? I know it a relatively new board and I have ruled out belt and pully problems, I don't get these problems in slic3r, none of the axis are jamming or fouling, I get the same problems with the sd card and the nozzle isn't hitting the rest of the print.
What other slicers would anyone recommend that might work.
Thanks
