A10T Marlin 1.1.8 Auto home ARGHHJJ

I bought this A10T "new and unused" via a well known auction site.
It was in its original box and did look unused but after correct assembly (instructions followed to the letter) it won't auto home.
It powers up fine and I can use the move axis to get the axes to move 1mm at a time (ish) but selecting auto home tracks the Z axis to the limit switch and the X and Y axes to the opposite extreme to the limit switch. It then makes a deep grunting noise for many seconds. I powered it down a couple of times before this stopped but eventually braved it out and after about 20 seconds the head tracks around and comes to rest at what looks like zero on Z and about 25% front and left of centre in X and Y.
I'm not sure what firmware is installed (or should be) and have not attempted to upgrade this yet.
Any suggestions help or guidance very much appreciated.
