Of course you need to buy a new extruder if you want a dual extruder and not have one already, but you don't need to buy a new controller, only add a driver for the second extruder motor and modify the firmware so that it can handle dual extruder.

Are you sure that Marlin MK4duo is compatible with the GT2560 board? It sounds like either something is wrong with your connections or the firmware you are using is not compatible.
